In 2006 we started offering small group seminars here at Jenner’s Run.  With 160 acres, numerous buildings, and a great agility course, the setting is ideal for teaching search and rescue canine skills without a lot of time spent in travel.  There are accommodations for 8 participants on site, and the “live in” style makes great opportunities for sharing knowledge, experiences, and questions.  We are very excited about our 2008 offerings.

Teaching the Concept of Handling a/k/a Directability: Busting a Move with Your Dog! – August 15 -17, 2008 – Libby Milroy

This seminar is designed to help you achieve great distance control and direct-ability with your dog.  We all know this is a critical skill for searching effectively, keeps your dog safer in searches, and the dogs LOVE it!  The seminar will be taught by Libby Milroy, who is an excellent instructor and an accomplished handler and judge of hunting retrievers.

Libby lives in North Platte, Nebraska with her husband Ron Green, who is a veterinarian.  They raise and train American Field Labradors (www.duckdawg.com) and own and manage a veterinarian clinic. Libby has run AKC Field Trials and Hunt Tests and UKC Hunt Tests, and is a UKC hunt test judge. They currently have 12 dogs, 10 Labs and 2 Jack Russell Terriers, and Libby can’t imagine a house without dog hair!

Libby became interested in formally training dogs after she met her husband.  She loved the challenge of trying to communicate such complex concepts and has extensively studied various methods of training and developed ways to improve the training to “fit” personal  styles and individual dog’s style of communicating.

This seminar will start with teaching a young pup (12 weeks and up) the early concepts of eye contact, hand signals, and whistle commands.

Right and Left Over

Right and Left Back

Come In

Sit on a whistle

Come in on a  whistle

Literal casting

We will also go over several drills that help teach the concept and keep it fun for the dog.

                        Wagon Wheel Drill

                        Walking Baseball

                        “T” drill

Libby will have hand-outs that diagram all the drills.

We will advance from young dog work with treats/toys/check cords to more advanced work. We will also talk about moving the drills from the “yard” to the “field” and how everything needs to be re-defined again. This begins the generalization phase for all situations.

We will also talk about how to solve certain problems that can crop up such as

Bugging (dog refusing to look at you)

                        Auto casting (dog anticipating)

                        Taking the wrong cast

This will be a family style/immersion type training…. Similar to moving in with a family in a foreign country to live, eat, and breathe another language!  The cost is all inclusive – tuition, room and board for $250.00.  There will be a maximum of 8 participants.  The seminar will start with registration at 1700 on Friday evening, August 15th (dinner that evening is included) and will end at 1500 on Sunday, August 17th.  Denver, Colorado is the closest airport (about a 2 hour drive).

Lodging will be on site at Jenner’s Run, 2 to a room, good meals (group preparation), great area for the dogs (yes, they can sleep with you!), wonderful opportunity to share ideas and spend time with the instructor and other participants in a relaxed home environment.

More information to follow with registration……remember, the seminar is limited to 8 participants!  Please get your registration in as soon as possible to help us prepare to meet your needs.  Any special diet needs….please let us know and we will attempt to accommodate.  Please pass on to others who may be interested!

 HUMAN REMAINS DETECTION CLINIC

In 2006 we started offering small group seminars here at Jenner’s Run.  With 160 acres, numerous buildings, and a great agility course, the setting is ideal for teaching search and rescue canine skills without a lot of time spent in travel.  There are accommodations for 8 participants on site, and the “live in” style makes great opportunities for sharing knowledge, experiences, and questions.  We are very excited about our 2008 offerings.

This seminar on HRD Detection will be taught by Teresa MacPherson, who is an excellent instructor on this topic and others.

Teresa MacPherson has been involved in SAR since 1990.  She has certified dogs in wilderness, disaster, human remains recovery and water search.  Teresa and her partners have responded to hundreds of searches, including many disaster missions.  These missions include the 1995 OKC bombing of the Federal Building and, most recently, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with many in between. Her search experience includes numerous responses to call-outs by the FBI, the Secret Service, and State and local law enforcement agencies.  She has been involved in multiple HRD searches in a wilderness setting.

Her current canine, Georgia (9 years), is operational in disaster search, wilderness search and human remains recovery.  Banks (4 years) is operational in disaster search and Keys (2 yrs) is in training.

Teresa resides in Catlett, VA with her husband, Jack, and her three Labrador Retrievers—all of whom keep her quite busy.

This will be a family style/immersion type training…. Kind of like when you move in with a family in a foreign country and live, eat, and breathe another language!  The cost is all inclusive – tuition, room and board for $350.00.  There will be a maximum of 8 participants.  The seminar will start with registration at 0800 on Friday, July 25th and ends at 1300 on Sunday, July 27th.

Lodging is available for Thursday the 24thth and Sunday the 27th if that makes it easier for you.  Please pass on to others who may be interested!
